TL;DR: Anthropic has moved Claude onto local rupee pricing in India, now its biggest market after the US. Claude Pro lands at Rs 2,399/month billed monthly, or an effective Rs 2,000/month on annual billing. And there is still no UPI — card or app-store billing only.
Anthropic began localising Claude’s pricing for India on 13 July 2026. Until now Indian users paid in dollars and ate whatever their card issuer added on top. Local pricing removes that friction and, more importantly, signals that India is no longer being treated as a rounding error — TechCrunch reports it is Anthropic’s largest market after the United States.
Here is our take: the pricing is the easy half. The hard half is payments, and Anthropic has not shipped it. UPI settles the overwhelming majority of consumer digital payments in this country. Asking an Indian user to put a credit card on file for a recurring foreign subscription is asking them to do the one thing UPI trained them out of doing. OpenAI already accepts UPI for ChatGPT Plus at a near-identical price point.
So the real comparison is not Rs 2,399 against Rs 1,999. It is one checkout that works the way people expect against one that does not. Until UPI lands, Claude’s India pricing is a discount with a tollbooth in front of it.
